Hasue Hounds was established in 1974. We started in sighthounds with Afghan Hounds and Salukis. In 1982,we added Whippets. Currently only Whippets reside at home as our companions and house dogs. Usually we have only 3 whippets at home.
If you don't already own a whippet but would like to learn more we reccomend visiting a local dog show. To find a local dog show vist http://www.infodog.com, or to learn more visit http://www.americanwhippetclub.net( the national whippet club).
Our litters are carefully planned , breeding for one main goal. To continue our breeding program ,which we hope will produce a perfect specimen, as the American Whippet Standard ( American Whippet Club Home Page ) describes. Our program is to breed dogs which are physically sound in conformation and mentally sound as well.
ANSWERS TO SOME FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS?
We do not breed for the general public or just for pet stock. With each litter, we do occasionally have Pet Puppies- please write us at whippetlover1@hotmail.com
What is a Pet/Companion puppy?
Pet puppies are those puppies, we feel will not mature into
dogs, we would want
to show or dogs we might want to use in our breeding program in
the future. They are just as beautiful as our show dogs too. Pet
Puppies are sold to responsible homes at reasonable prices and
are sold on neuter/spay agreements, since we feel these
puppys should not be used for breeding puposes.
Can Pet Puppies be shown?
No, our pet puppies sold to new owners are required to be neuterd/spayed,
they cannot be shown in
conformation. AKC doesnt allow altered dogs to compete in conformation.
AKC registerd dogs who are neutered can compete in many activities.AKC
does sponsor events such as Lure coursing obedience, agility,
flyball. Straight or oval track racing is available thru local
whippet clubs. Whippets are very versititle dogs they can do many
things and do them well, under the guidence of loving
responsible owners, who are willing to take time to train them.So
if you want a good pet or companion dog, we do encourage you to
contact us, we may have a dog available that might be just right
for you.
DO WE RECOMMEND OTHER BREEDERS?
We do keep a list of other breeders we recommend -"when we don't have puppies." Those are breeders we know and trust and would personally buy a dog from if we were intrested in a dog.We don't refer people by geographic area or what is convient , we refer to help a prosective owner find the very best dog for their needs from someone they can trust and rely on.
HOW OUR PUPPIES ARE RAISED AND WHEN THEY LEAVE HOME
Our pet puppies do not leave home till 09 weeks. We keep them until they have been taught some basic housebreaking skills, crate training (especially if were shipping) and how to walk on a lead, they also have 2 inoculations and a one year Rabies inoculation (in some cases).. We do try to help all our clients by education, providing lists of books to read, and other resource material, and always being there for both you and your new puppy 100%,for the puppies lifetime. We make sure they are totally prepared for their new home before leaving our home!
Our whippets have always been active participants in the show ring, coursing and in other activities. We do breed whippets that are versatile and can not only show, but do obedience, lure course, race, and work in agility. We strive for multi purpose dogs.
We encourage new owners who purchase puppies from us, no matter whether they are show puppies or pets to get involved in other activities besides just showing. Many of our pet owners not only do obedience with their dogs, or coursing, others are interested in agility, and therapy dog work. It's great for the dogs and for you as an owner as it strengthens the bond between dog and owner.
RESCUE CONTACT INFORMATION- We no longer do whippet rescue through the national whippet club, but we do refer those interested and qualified to own a rescue dog to those who have rescues for adoption both through the national club and through private sources who do rescue, rehabliation and adoption. please email us on this and we will be happy to send you to the person who can help you the most. We do want to tell you not everyone is a candidate for adopting a whippet, and its always the answer for everyone who wants a dog, remember owning a puppy, young adult or a rescue is a full time commitment , you have to have the time to make a commitment to a dog who will be with you for many yrs please consider this while your doing your research on dog ownership and on the whippet breed.
Shipping and Travel
While we would prefer our clients come pick up their dogs, so we can visit our home and our dogs, its not always possible, so shipping is a good, economical method of transportation. We have over 28yrs of shipping experience in the US, Canada and world wide. Shipping costs vary from airlines to airlines and locations. We ship out of Detroit Metro Airport and have an established repour with all the major airlines. Yes we do shop for the best airfares and the best flights for the dog. Most flights in the US are around 2-4 hours of actual time, many are direct, and we do recommend using priority services like Delta Dash, American Priority and Northwest counter to counter, while they are a bit more expensive than shipping cargo, the shipment is guaranteed to arrive on schedule. Cargo is not much different it also depends on many factors like weather conditions, (heat embargoes in summer restrict cargo and not priority most times-same for below average temperatures )
Shipping for the most part is prepaid, as we do have to pay when we do the paperwork to ship at the airport, we book the flight about 24-48hrs ahead of time as well and try to be as flexible as the airlines can give us with schedules of departure and arrival times. Your puppy is already use to a crate and traveling in a crate for visits to dog class, the vets or social outings. So don't worry he wont be scared. We use a 200size air kennel which is just the right size for your puppy, we include dry bedding or crate pad. A bag of food is attached to the crate top, and directions on feeding for the airline ground crews should a delay happen. We do put water (frozen the night before ) in the 2dishes that are required in the crate attached to the door for puppy to get a drink, and we put a toy in that puppy is familiar with to keep him company on his ride.
Dogs travel in the cargo hold of the plane, each plane is configured differently so the location of the hold is different on different planes. Airlines are only allowed to ship a certain number of dogs, and the hold is heated during the winter and air cooled during the summer months. The airlines requires us as the shipper to provide a health certificate (within 10days of travel domestically-5-7days internationally) certifying that the dog is healthy and able to fly. We also are required to give the airlines a statement on temperatures and how the puppy can manage them, its called an acclamation statement. Both of these are required by federal and international guidelines and law..We do label the crate with a to and from sticker at home and also at the airport. The airlines does weight the crate with puppy inside and they do make sure the puppy can stand up and turn around without touching its head to the top of the crate. So both the airline and ourselves as the shipper do meet certain requirements, that are federal, state and even local laws regarding shipping. Airlines must handle them in a proper fashion as their requirements dictate, and the ground crews who do work with the dogs are dog lovers too and take special care of them..So if you must ship don't worry
What if I want to fly out pick up my puppy and fly home?
That's easier, you lets us know when your coming to visit, we will arrange for all the documents to travel and book a space on the flight your returning home on, your puppy if it is under 14inches tall (the crate) or sherpa bag that is airline approved and must fit under your seat while in flight can come on the plane with you..If the crate is larger than the space it will fly in cargo and goes as cargo (status both ways whether on board or in the hold) The price you pay is a baggage price usually $50-$100 one way as opposed to shipping the puppy alone which runs $125-$250 depending on geographic location, flight availability ect. SO it is a savings (overseas flights run $350 cargo plus the paperwork fees which vary by country-overseas on board (in the hold) run $100 each way.. We do encourage you to come pick up your puppy no matter the distance and don't allow shipping to scare you. We make it as easy as possible and the airlines all help in every possible way. We also have shipping service groups like pet express who charges a fee to ship a pet in the US or internationally as well, but they are more expensive and only used if we have problems with weather or flight availability. So don't worry we do make sure your puppy comes clean dry and happy with his toy, a lead and collar for him and a soft crate pad or absorbent material to make him comfortable..
We do occasionally have puppies for sale, both show and
pet/companion dog. Currently we are taking names for our waiting

fits into their lifestyle.
